For the next two months, we will be highlighting a few of the amazing women of Simatree. Across a variety of roles, the goal of this series is to showcase the different skill sets critical to Simatree’s (and our clients!) success. Plus, it will give you a little insight into who these women are outside of work!  Learn more about our fourth featured team member, Shea Tarring, below.

Shea is a Senior Consultant at Simatree, and has experience in the immigration and healthcare sectors doing executive-level reporting and project coordination. Shea graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Despite going to school in South Carolina, Shea is from Northern Virginia and grew up there her whole life, so when Simatree reached out to her two years ago, she was excited to learn that they were based in Arlington, Virginia.

Q: Can you share a project that you’re particularly proud of?

A: I was recruited for an urgent and unique project supporting a government-ran unaccompanied migrant children shelter and seven emergency family staging centers. We led the operational day-to-day reporting to keep leadership apprised of critical issues. As you can imagine, this project required vigilant attention to detail, but the here-and-now nature is what made it especially meaningful. As my first professional undertaking, I had no idea how unique this project really was – and how much I got to experience! Now that some time has passed and I’ve gained more work experiences, I appreciate it and am proud of my embracive attitude.

Q: Do you have any strategies for finding work-life balance at Simatree?

A: A simple strategy that helps me maintain a work-life balance is turning my Outlook and Teams notifications off on the weekends and when I’m taking time off. This helps me disconnect and recharge! I also try to get a head start in the morning and tackle my big to-dos early. I feel the most focused in the morning, so this strategy helps me maximize that window and allows me to take breaks in the afternoon. I’m thankful for Simatree’s flexibility, making work-life balance possible.

Q: What is your favorite activity to do outside of work?

A: After moving back to Virginia for a year, I landed in the middle: North Carolina. More specifically, the Outer Banks of North Carolina to do more of my favorite activity: being outside. I enjoy long walks, biking, reading on the beach, yoga, and watching the sunrise and sunset. And I recently started learning how to surf! We definitely need more lady surfers out there.

Q: What would you tell young women who are just starting to work? What would you like them to know?

A: The sky is the limit, and you are capable! That’s what I would tell my little sister, who is starting her freshman year of college this fall. We often underestimate our capabilities. And, I would say don’t be afraid to think outside the box, beyond gender norms and stereotypes.
